Power of the book. ETV Girls Choir, Villu Veski, Madars Kalniņš, Deniss Paškevičs

The summer concert of the Niguliste Museum concert series “Art Sounds” combines folk songs and Runo songs with contemporary rhythms and is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Estonian and Latvian book.

Villu Veski: saxophone
Madars Kalniņš: piano
Deniss Paškevičs: flute and saxophone
Estonian Television Girls’ Choir, conducted by Aarne Saluveer

For the first time, the audience will hear a new piece inspired by the Year of the Book by the Estonian saxophonist and composer Villu Veski, performed by the Estonian Television Girls’ Choir, conducted by Aarne Saluveer, and the prominent Latvian soloists Madars Kalniņš (piano) and Deniss Paškevičs (flute and saxophone). Together, they create a youthful, energetic and profound musical experience, inviting the audience to “take time to read and immerse themselves in books!” In addition to Villu Veski’s new piece, the choir will perform several beloved songs that live in the hearts of Estonians by Cyrillus Kreek, Veljo Tormis, Olav Ehala and Pärt Uusberg. The concert will be preceded by a curator’s tour of the exhibition Estonian Book 500. Relics (in Estonian).

The concert series “Art Sounds” began this spring. Curated in collaboration with the Estonian saxophonist and composer Villu Veski, the events combine art and music and feature musicians and curators known both in Estonia and internationally. The series is based on the medieval art treasures of the Niguliste Museum and its exhibition programme. The concerts intertwine the worlds created by the exhibitions with diverse soundscapes and are preceded by short tours by art historians.
