Welcome Tour: Treasures of Toledo Cathedral (in Spanish)
A short tour in Spanish (30-40 min) introduces the newly opened exhibition “Dives Toletana. Treasures of Toledo Cathedral from the Middle Ages to El Greco”. The tour is guided by Jorge Hernández.
The tour takes visitors on a journey through nearly 1,000 years of Spanish history and introduces the works of art from Toledo Cathedral, Santa Cruz Museum, and the Church of San Nicolás de Bari in Toledo, including liturgical objects, paintings, and tapestries. For example, visitors can see the tapestry “The Defenders of the Eucharist,” based on a design by Rubens, the casula of cardinal Cisneros, Queen Isabel I’s ceremonial chair, paintings by El Greco and José de Ribera, and much more. The exhibits are a good example of a “living heritage,” as many objects are still in frequent use today.
For the first time in Estonia, visitors can see original works by El Greco and rare art treasures from Toledo Cathedral – one of Spain’s most important places of worship. Toledo Cathedral is opening its extraordinary treasure chamber, revealing a thousand years of art and devotion, from the Visigoths to the Spanish Golden Age. Its walls preserve layers of living heritage: the spiritual depth of the Visigoths, the refined geometry of Islamic art, the luminous heights of Gothic architecture, and the humanist renewal of the Renaissance.
Welcome Tour is a series of curator-led tours in English at the Old Town branches of the Art Museum of Estonia, where museum professionals introduce Estonian cultural heritage and temporary exhibitions, ranging from medieval to contemporary art. Come and learn about art, culture and history. Everyone is welcome!
Jorge Hernández is a brilliant performer and expert on Spanish art and culture, whose tours are always highly appreciated by audiences.
